Hardcore an der Weggabelung

(English version below)

Dort muss eine Entscheidung her.

HARDCORE AT THE CROSSROADS

The crossroads has got no fanclub, unlike, let's say, the pretzel. This does not amaze me too much, because the crossroads is not quite a tidbit in its design. And still the crossroads is something special, since it connects some streets that would not meet if the junction did not exist.

It is also something like that in the new album by Ironwill that has lately been released on Blood & Ink Records. The disk called „Unturned“ includes eight Hardcore songs in which – like at the crossroads – different influences converge. This finds a very clear expression in the rhythm section of the band from Georgia: The guitars sound very harmonious by Hardcore standards. While other bands settle for power chords Ironwill do not shy away from complex harmonies – and in the very next moment rumbe like thunder again. The vocals, too, embrace this basic feeling of harmony with a disposition to explosiveness. The voice that is carried on the harmonies still conserves in all its screams a spark of singing and ocasionally turns to a hoarse sound.

Now, an advantage of the crossroads is that it can bring together differences. But if you are on your way and arrive at a crossing you have got to take the decision to what direction you want to continue your journey. This is a central topic in the lyrics by Ironwill. As a Christian band the guys from Georgia are heavily influenced by the Bible. Thus there is, for example, a hardcore version of the parable about the prodigal son (Gospel of Luke, chapter 15) on their record („Prodigal“) or of the comparison of God to a potter („I am the Clay“) that Paul once uses (Letter to the Romans, chapter 9). Ironwill obviously pick up ideas that have got quite a lot of miles on their clocks, but their lyrics still do not produce a trivial expression. This is because Ironwill update the good old ideas for their individual lives. Eminently striking on the new album is the image of life resembling a journey. In almost every song on „Unturned“ the theme of the way or of the wanderings is to be heard. And every journey holds a crucial point, of course, at the crossroads. There, a decision has to be taken. With their music Ironwill express the conviction that this kind of everyday decisions are not irrelevant. The guys want to chose the right way and take their decisions in reliance on God.
