It is time to cut a rug again. Today 180 Out provide us with the suitable sound for this. They have put the melodies of Michael W. Smith with the rhythms of the Ramones through the mill. What you get at the end is a tasty veggie burger: New Wave with a crisp bite and a lot of pop appeal. The album „Black and White“ resembles the early Altar Boys a lot. Just abstaining from those uncool blow-dry hard-rock-hairstyles of the 80s. You can clearly tell from their chord progressions that 180 Out stem from the worship corner. The band hones their unique garage-praise-sound by wonderful vocal harmonies, the voices of guitarist Joe and bassist Grace brilliantly complementing one another. This one is for sure the newwaviest record from the assortment of Thumper Punk.

Old Wine in New Skins

As is generally known, red wine tastes the best when it has seen several springs. The same can also be true in Punk music. In any case the members of the band The Old-Timers are old as the hills. All of them are about in their mid-30s. Because of their old age you may have met them elsewhere before. Maybe you remember Dave from the Scottish Hardcore group Dragged Out. And maybe you have seen Don at a show at the South African town Port Elizabeth. And you will probably remember Matt from those times when he still swung his drumsticks with False Idle from North America's Idaho. Obviously, globalization is not stopping at Christian Hardcore and thus the three of them have now released a record called „Soli Deo Gloria“ which is pretty impressive.

Backe-backe-Kuchen

Wer ein gutes Punk-Album backen will, braucht ein Pfund Krach, eine mittelgroße Gitarre, eine Tasse Melodie und eine doppelte Prise lustiger Durchgeknalltheit. So geht der Klassiker. Seit der Zeit unserer Großeltern Oma Patti und Opa Joey wird das Rezept in dieser Form überliefert. Doch mitunter ist es auch nötig, dass Pioniere der Zuckerbäckerei sich aufmachen, um etwas Neues auszuprobieren und dem Althergebrachten so firschen Pepp zu verleihen. Solche Pioniere der Punkmusik sind Destroy Nate Allen.

Let Your Nerve Tracts Run Hot

„Where Thieves Cannot Tread“ is the title of the new album by Hardcore three piece JumpShip Quick. The album artwork fits the band name very well, because it is adorned by a sinking ocean liner. This record contains 16+1 pleasingly fast and melodious Hardcore songs whose mainly poppy parts remind me of older stuff by NoFX or MxPx whereas the wilder parts remind me of the Assorted Jelly Beans or German blast band Praiser. These guys really know who to write catchy melodies without chumming up unduly. This way they are keeping their songs a bit inconvenient all the time. And that is what Punk Rock has got to be like, right?

Spanisch-Stunde

¿Qué numéro de teléfono tienes tu? - So geht der einzige spanische Satz, den ich aktiv beherrsche: „Wie lautet deine Telefonnummer?“ Dummerweise bietet sich aber in meinem Alltag nur sehr selten die Gelegenheit, diesen Satz zu benutzten. Ein bisschen Nachhilfe-Unterricht bekomme ich nun von der Band Metanoia aus Chile. Denn diese vier Jungs liefern mit „Retroceder Nunca“ ein Album ab, das von vorn bis hinten in rasantestem Spanisch besungen ist. Besser als Spanisch verstehe ich übrigens Altgriechisch, weil ich das im Alltag häufiger benutze. Und so kapiere ich wenigstens den Bandnamen der Chilenen: Metanoia bedeutet „innerlich Umdrehen“ oder „mentale Kehrtwende“.

Size Does Matter

We are living in times of musical play back devices whose speakers are about as bis as a Quarter Dollar. I am thinking of all those laptops and cell phones that draw their music from the mp3 supermarkets of the worldwide web. Of course I do not want to demonize this. It is completely okay to me if you like to enjoy your music through the two rubber ear plugs of your telephone. I just want to say: Music can be louder. After all, size does matter. Some years ago I have dug out a pair of fat old speaker cabinets and a fat old stereo amplifier from the most remote corner of my basement. And I was really happy about this sort of equipment, when a pre-release copy of True Liberty's new album came flying into my mailbox lately.

Würdevoll altern

Vor vielen Jahren verkündeten die Descendents trotzig „I Don't Want to Grow up“ und erklärten damit den Don Quixote'schen Windmühlen den Kampf. Hat natürlich nichts genützt. Der Zahn der Zeit war stärker. Im Unterschied zu den Descendents legen MxPx nun ein Album vor, das sich mit dem Erwachsen-Werden ausgesöhnt hat. Und dazu noch sehr beachtlichen Dampf erzeugt.

Travel to the Past

What's over is over. But still, the past is not simply gone just because nobody is able to turn back the clock. Who keeps the eyes – or, more precisely: the ears – open can still encounter things that stem from the past, even in our present. Like, for example, the nice Complete-Works-Edition of uniSEF that has been released by Thumper Punk Records lately.

Was lange währt

wird endlich gut. Denn ihr Debut-Album hatten Front 77 ja bereits seit Monaten angekündigt. Jetzt ist es so weit: Anfang März ist das Erstlingswerk „Soli Deo Gloria“ der Band aus Aue erschienen. Und das Warten hat sich gelohnt. Endlich gibt es den altbekannten Song „Perestroika“, sowie andere Hits auch für die heimische Stereoanlage! Das Ergebnis kann sich hören lassen: Die Melodien gehen wunderbar ins Ohr, die Vocals werden Oi-mäßig gegröhlt, und die Kunst des abrupten Liedschlusses haben Front 77 perfektioniert.

Mixed Feelings

It has not very often been as difficult for me to write a review as today. Because in terms of music and melodies the record „Helpless but not Hopeless“ by California's The Way is to my taste really the coolest release during the last months. Finally a Christian band whose sound is fit to hold a candle to Bad Religion! I am honestly taken with the high amount of fun factor that The Way are arousing here. For this I give them an A+.

The times are definitely gone when Hardcore still sounded like a herd of madcap gorillas treating their guitars and drums with cudgels. To a growing degree bands are incorporating gentle and sensitive parts into their music. Some call this Post-Core, others term it Emotional Hardcore. However. - At any rate this results in some sort of music that fuses the fury of New School Hardcore with the beauty and tragedy of human life. During the past months Blood and Ink Records have released several records of bands that bustle at this boundary line between inspection and bluster. With the EP „Signs of the Time“ by the band With Increase they have lately put out an oeuvre that carries the development to its peak. Because on „Signs of the Time“ the contemplative parts even outweigh the explosive ones.

On the Nature of Faith

Which is the most important virtue in Punk Rock? Loudness? - That one is important for sure. Provocation? - Not to be scoffed at, too. The courage to express one's own opinion? Definitely, that is also very essential. But what about simplicity? Simplicity must be listed at this place on all accounts. Because Punk and musical virtuosity do not go together very well. Otherwise, what you get is New School Hardcore. Simplicity is not a bad thing. Far from it! What Punk Rock needs is this certain ounce of ingeniousness to play music which is simple and intoxicating at the very same moment. This sort of an ingenious ounce can be found in the music of the Kings Kids sure enough. They play Street Punk without frills that often sounds like Rancid and sometimes a bit like the Misfits. By abstaining from complicated solos and tricky rhythms the Kings Kids have created the album „Set Sail and Seek“ which is full of earworms who get stuck in your auditory canal until you bait them out again by offering them an extra large pizza. That is what I call successful songwriting. Punk Rock that is fun precisely because it is not overcharged.

Enzyklopädie der christlichen Punkmusik, Teil 3

Inzwischen hat er schon ein paar Wochen auf dem Buckel, verliert aber trotzdem nichts von seinem Elan. Gemeint ist „Punk Never Dies, Vol. 1“, der kostenlose Sampler aus dem Hause Indie Vision Music. Auf der Compilation tummelt sich alles, was in der christlichen Punkmusik Rang und Namen hat. Oder gerade im Begriff ist, berüchtigt zu werden. Neben solchen Klassikern wie Headnoise und Value Pac sind auch einige jüngere Bands auf dem Sampler vertreten, die es sich zu entdecken lohnt.

Sie widersprechen ihren Eltern, legen die Beine übereinander und tyrannisieren ihre Lehrer.“ - Dieser Ausspruch wird schon seit längerer Zeit dem guten alten Philosophen Sokrates in die Schuhe geschoben. Allerdings wird nicht überliefert, ob die Feststellung als Kritik oder nicht vielleicht doch als Kompliment verstanden werden will.

Apocalyptic Comrades

The style of this record from the Blood & Ink family is hard to define: What about Post-Crossover-Emocore? Or Post-Wave-Newschool? It is definitely Post-Something. You can clearly tell that the roots of this music are located in Emotional Hardcore, but Comrades also pitch on the best elements from other styles of guitar music. Moshing parts are reduced to a minimum and shouting hardly appears. The result sounds a bit like Joe Satriani, just without that annoying fuss of solo stumbling over solo. - First and foremost gentle, very varied and largely instrumental.

Das Wort „Minderheit“ klingt ja nicht unbedingt so, als wäre es das pure Vergnügen, zu einer zu gehören. Allerdings pflegen bestimmte Gruppen – besonders wenn es sich bei ihnen um weltanschauliche Clubs handelt – ja auch ein gewisses Minderheiten-Bewusstsein. Denn das hilft dabei, sich selbst als Teil einer Elite zu sehen. Das nämlich ist dann schon irgendwie ein Vergnügen. Zu solchen weltanschaulichen Gruppen mit Minderheiten-Gehabe zählen zum Beispiel die Punks oder die Christen. Und ganz besonders gilt das eben Gesagte dann wohl für christliche Punks, denn die sind dann gewissermaßen Minderheit zum Quadrat. Aber gegen die Gefahr, dass christliche Punks jetzt vor lauter Selbstbewusstsein die Bodenhaftung verlieren, hilft der Genuss von „Punk Never Dies, Vol. 1“ Dieser schöne Sampler von Indie Vision Music vereinigt die Songs von mehr als 50 christlichen Punkbands und verhilft dadurch zu der sehr heilsamen Einsicht, dass diese Leute jetzt nicht völlig vom Aussterben bedroht sein können. Außer den alten Hasen von Dogwood und Empty Tomb mischen hier auch zahlreiche kleinere Bands mit, wie etwa die folgenden:

Gimme Seven!

You won't get a five finger discount on this one, because the new EP by the band Absolved goes up to seven. And seven, for sure, beats five by far. Although the title „This One Goes up to Seven“ sounds like pure understatement at first it is actually a seal of quality of course. All good things come in sevens: Seven dwarfs, seven wonders of the world, seven years of plenty – and then, finally, the seven songs on the latest opus of the Absolved.

Anständig unanständig

Religion und Politik gehören zu den Tabuthemen des Smalltalk. Dieses ungeschriebene Gesetz lässt sich mehr oder weniger schon bis zum berühmten Freiherrn von Knigge zurückverfolgen: Alle haben das Recht auf eine eigene Meinung, und daher sei es unfein, den Mitmenschen eine Frikadelle über die eigene Weltsicht ans Ohr zu sabbeln. Wer in solcher vornehmen Zurückhaltung die Ausgeburt des Anstands erblickt, muss das neueste Werk von Praiser als ausgesprochen unanständig empfinden. Denn völlig ungehemmt sprechen die beiden Jungs aus Hamburg auf der „Darkest Hour EP“ sowohl religiöse als auch politische Themen an. Indem sie erklären „The only country I belong to is the kingdom of God“, geben sie ein unmissverständliches Statement ab: Der Glaube an Gott wehrt allem Nationalismus und aller Überheblichkeit gegenüber den Bewohnern von anderen Teilen der Welt. Weil das wichtig ist, lassen sich Praiser nicht von irgendwelchen Benimm-Aposteln den Mund verbieten und untermalen ihre unanständige Botschaft mit anständigem Getöse. Das intelligente Wechselspiel in den Vocals geht ab wie's Zäpfchen und führt dazu, dass Praiser auf der neuen EP irgendwie noch schneller klingen als sonst. Nach dem Genuss der drei Tracks fühle ich mich wie vom Blitzeinschlag geküsst. Dieses musikalische Vergnügen gibt es wie immer kostenlos auf der Praiser-Homepage zum Download.

Bring back that Feeling to Me!

During the late 1980s and early 90s I mostly used to sit in my bedroom playing with toy blocks or with my model railway. Instead of – as I should have done – having my hair dyed blue and listening to loud music of wild bands. But now late bloomers like me can receive assistance, because the band Unshackled from El Paso, Texas, have lately released their CD „The Overcoming Years“ on Thumper Punk. On this album they play hard but melodious Punk Rock in the style of the late 80s and garnish their sound with a pinch of modern Hardcore. At listening to this CD I am inwardly transported back to those good old days that you could call a "golden era" if not its shine had rather been a rancidly beercanny one. The music by Unshackled breathes that slightly anarchistic air of the Chaos Days generation.
