To Be or not to Be

A cool record from Overseas has found its way into my stereos a few days ago. The opus is called MMX and stems from the Kiwi band Declaration AD. The band plays a straight Hardcore style, right in the face. Croaky shouts are joined with likably purist guitar riffs and with the faith in God's working in this world.

Of course life still does not always look bright to Declaration AD because of that. The first track of the EP already expresses this. It is about the desperate quest for meaning, that repeats always the same sentences again and again:

In an age of despair – you are
in an age of pain – you are
in an age of doubts – you are,
you are.

But those who want to start and feel low real depressively in the face of this huge load of despair are abruptly pulled off their melancholy by the beginning of the second song. That song starts with the drawn-out shout „God!“ Together, the two parts make one whole:

In times of despair, of pain and of doubt – you are God.

Like this, all of a sudden, the shout of despair turns to be a shout of hope. That God is there is what Moses gets to learn in the famous episode at the burning bush already (Exodus, chapter 3): Moses asks God for his name, and God's answer is in the noteworthy words „I am the One who will be there for you.“ That's what Declaration AD trust in, too. They do not deny that pain and despair exist but they do believe that God is there for them, even in desperate times.

On the whole the guys from New Zealand give away some real positive mood with the download of their EP that is to be enjoyed as loud as possible.

Eine coole Platte aus Übersee hat kürzlich ihren Weg in meine Anlage gefunden. Das Opus heißt MMX und stammt von der neuseeländischen Band Declaration AD. Die Band spielt gradlinigen Hardcore, direkt in die Fresse. Heisere Shouts verbinden sich mit angenehm puristischen Gitarren-Riffs und mit dem Vertrauen auf das Wirken Gottes in der Welt.

Natürlich sieht das Leben auch für Declaration AD deswegen nicht immer gleich rosig aus. Das bringt schon der erste Track der EP zum Ausdruck. Dort geht es um die verzweifelte Suche nach dem Sinn, die immer wieder die gleichen Sätze wiederholt:

In an age of despair – you are
in an age of pain – you are
in an age of doubts – you are,
you are.

Aber wer sich angesichts dieser geballten Ladung Verzweiflung gerade so richtig depressiv hängen lassen will, wird durch den Beginn des zweiten Stücks jäh aus der Melancholie herausgerissen. Denn dieses Stück beginnt mit dem langgezogenen Schrei „God!“ Zusammen ergeben die beiden Teile ein Ganzes:

In Zeiten der Verzweiflung, des Schmerzes und des Zweifels – bist du Gott.

Plötzlich wird der Schrei der Verzweiflung zum Schrei der Hoffnung. Dass Gott da ist, bekommt schon Moses in der berühmten Episode mit dem brennenden Dornbusch zu hören (Exodus, Kapitel 3). Dort fragt Moses Gott nach seinem Namen, und Gott antwortet mit der bemerkenswerten Aussage: „Ich bin der, der für euch da sein wird.“ Darauf vertrauen auch Declaration AD. Sie streiten nicht ab, dass es Schmerz und Verzweiflung gibt, aber sie verlassen sich darauf, dass Gott auch in solchen verzweifelten Zeiten für sie da ist.

So verschenken die Jungs aus Neuseeland mit dem Download ihrer EP insgesamt eine wirklich positive Stimmung, die am liebsten laut genossen werden will.
