Uncovering the Self-Deception

A superb debut record was fired into the orbit by Jawbone from Indiana recently. The EP called „Loss of Innocence“ contains four furious Hardcore songs, that largely do without annoying Metal influences and that go under one's skin by their impressing intensity. Blood & Ink Recods have released the whole thing in the form of a nice 7“ vinyl record.

The album artwork displays already that Jawbone turn towards a side of life which most people try ignore: namely its end. Hourglass and scythe symolize death here, and death also appears in the lyrics of the EP. But interestingly the band's furiousness does not result from the despair about the inescapability of the end. - Rather, Jawbone are furious because most contemporaries simply disdain death.

Who honestly faces the beginning and the end of life will see that no one brings any possessions into this world nor can any one take anything with her or him out of this world. Because of this no thing can definitely be owned. But in the moment of our birth we start to want things and therefore get stuck in the fatal illusion that we had a right to call this and that our own. This is exactly the self-deception of mankind that the guys from Indiana want to make a stand against. The „Loss of Innocence“ the EP is entitled after arises automatically from the striving for property which humans are seemingly born with.

The bad thing about this is that, in fact, greed only makes people miserable instead of happy. Since nobody can satisfy one's own desire there just remains a depressing emptiness at the end. And, aside from that, craving only tempts to live at the expense of others and so only adds to the misery in this world instead of increasing one's own satisfaction.

From this point of view love is the opposite of greed. Jawbone do believe that only love can satisfy the longing. Indeed – and this is the crucial point – no one can give this love to herself or himself. Love only exists as a gift. Only those who allow themselves to be bestowed by love can escape from the self-deception of greed. Something quite similar is, by the way, already written in the bible (1st letter to Timothy, chapter 6).


DEM SELBSTBETRUG INS AUGE SEHEN

Ein erstklassiges Erstlingswerk haben Jawbone aus Indiana soeben in die Umlaufbahn abgefeuert. Die EP „Loss of Innocence“ umfasst vier wütende Hardcore-Songs, die weitgehend ohne nervige Metal-Einflüsse auskommen und durch ihre beeindruckende Intensität unter die Haut gehen. Blood & Ink Records veröffentlichen das Ganze in Form einer schönen 7“ Vinyl-Platte.

Schon dem Album Artwork lässt sich entnehmen, dass Jawbone sich der Seite des Lebens zuwenden, die viele Menschen gerne verdrängen: seinem Ende nämlich. Sanduhr und Sense symolisieren hier den Tod, der auch in den Lyrics der EP auftaucht. Aber interessanterweise rührt die musikalische Wut der Band nicht aus einer Verzweiflung über die Unausweichlichkeit des Endes her. - Eher sind Jawbone darüber wütend, dass die meisten Zeitgenossen den Tod einfach ignorieren.

Denn wer sich ehrlich mit dem Anfang und dem Ende des Lebens befasst, wird erkennen, dass niemand irgendeinen Besitz in die Welt mitbringt und genausowenig irgendetwas aus der Welt mitnehmen kann. Kein Ding kann dem Menschen darum endgültig gehören. Doch mit dem Zeitpunkt der Geburt beginnen wir, Dinge zu wollen und landen dadurch letztlich in der fatalen Illusion, dass wir ein Recht darauf hätten, dies und jenes unser Eigen zu nennen. Genau darin besteht der Selbstbetrug der Menschheit, dem die Jungs aus Indiana sich entgegenstellen wollen. Der „Verlust der Unschuld“, der die EP betitelt, kommt ganz von selbst aus dem Besitzstreben, das den Menschen scheinbar angeboren ist.

Schlimm ist nur, dass diese Gier in Wirklichkeit nur unglücklich macht und nicht glücklich. Denn da niemand die eigene Sehnsucht stillen kann, bleibt zum Schluss doch nur eine bedrückende Leere zurück. Außerdem reizt das Verlangen dazu, auf Kosten anderer zu leben und dadurch nur das Leid in der Welt zu vergrößern anstatt die eigene Zufriedenheit zu steigern.

So gesehen ist die Liebe das Gegenteil der Gier. Jawbone vertrauen darauf, dass nur die Liebe dazu taugt, die menschliche Sehnsucht zu stillen. Allerdings – und das ist das Entscheidende – kann keiner sich selbst diese Liebe geben. Liebe existiert nur als Geschenk. Nur wer sich von ihr beschenken lässt, kann dem Selbstbetrug der Gier entkommen. Das steht so ähnlich übrigens auch schon in der Bibel (1. Timotheusbrief, Kapitel 6).
