Shaking Walls

The sound of Debtor can make walls shake. For this band from Philadelphia plays Hardcore of some kind that is not quite so fast but the more emphatic instead. Especially because these guys from Pennsylvania do not invest all of their concentration on pure speed they can place musical emphasis on their subject matter very well-directedly. The new album „Bloodseeds“ has been released on Blood and Ink Records in July. Many of Debtor's lyrics quote smaller or larger sections from the bible. But the result of this is not a mere duplicate.

It is easy just to parrot biblical wisdom. True art, on the contrary, means to connect biblical statements to the present-day situation in a way that creates helpful impulses. Debtor are versed in this art excellently. Their lyrics challenge modern views of life critically: they deal with faith, with social life, with debt and with deliverance. By the means of dialogue with texts from the bible the band from Pennsylvania leads a way out from the carousel of the same old views. The honesty of these lyrics offers unequaled opportunities in the field of Christian Hardcore. At the sound of this music the walls of long-established worldviews must shake.

Conclusion: If the walls of ancient Jericho had not yet fallen in centuries ago we just had to send Debtor there and ask them to circle the city seven times while playing their songs.


WACKELNDE MAUERN

Der Sound von Debtor kann Mauern zum Erzittern bringen. Denn die Band aus Philadelphia spielt Hardcore von der nicht ganz so schnellen aber dafür umso nachdrücklicheren Sorte. Gerade weil die Jungs aus Pennsylvania nicht ihre gesamte Konzentration in pure Geschwindigkeit umsetzen, gelingt es ihnen, ihre Inhalte musikalisch sehr gezielt zu akzentuieren. Das aktuelle Album „Bloodseeds“ ist im Juli auf Blood and Ink Records erschienen. Viele der Songtexte von Debtor zitieren kleinere oder größere Portionen aus der Bibel. Aber was dabei herauskommt, ist keine bloße Kopie.

Biblische Weisheiten nachzuplaudern, das ist leicht. Die wahre Kunst besteht darin, die Aussagen aus der Bibel so mit der heutigen aktuellen Situation in Beziehung zu setzen, dass hilfreiche Impulse dabei herauskommen. Diese Kunst beherrschen Debtor auf's Vortrefflichste. Ihre Lyrics hinterfragen heutige gängige Sichtweisen kritisch: sie sprechen über Glauben, über menschliches Miteinander, über Schuld und über Befreiung. Und durch den Dialog mit Texten aus der Bibel weist die Band aus Pennsylvania einen Weg, der aus dem Karussell des Immergleichen herausführt. Die Ehrlichkeit dieser Songtexte sucht im Bereich des christlichen Hardcore ihresgleichen. Beim Klang dieser Musik erzittern die Mauern des Althergebrachten.

Fazit: Wenn die Mauern des antiken Jericho nicht schon längst eingestürzt wären, müssten wir nur Debtor hinschicken, um siebenmal musizierend um die Stadt herumzuziehen.
