During the late 1980s and early 90s I mostly used to sit in my bedroom playing with toy blocks or with my model railway. Instead of – as I should have done – having my hair dyed blue and listening to loud music of wild bands. But now late bloomers like me can receive assistance, because the band Unshackled from El Paso, Texas, have lately released their CD „The Overcoming Years“ on Thumper Punk. On this album they play hard but melodious Punk Rock in the style of the late 80s and garnish their sound with a pinch of modern Hardcore. At listening to this CD I am inwardly transported back to those good old days that you could call a "golden era" if not its shine had rather been a rancidly beercanny one. The music by Unshackled breathes that slightly anarchistic air of the Chaos Days generation.
But instead of throwing stones Unshackled hurl around rigorous lyrics in which they clearly state that they are holding strong opinions, just as it is very fitting in Punk Rock. In the center of this message there is the call to trust: "Trust in life and trust in God!" Unshackled are calling out to their audience. "You do not have to get sloshed by wasting your time on the internet or by consuming substances. Instead, you can take your life into your own hands and make something of it."
This message is obviously shaped by the band's Christian faith. According to the views of certain fundamentalist anarchists this may contradict the punk spirit of the 80s and 90s. But punk means to have a mind of one's own and to stand up for it. And this is very clearly what Unshackled have done. They have thought about it carefully and then made the decision to believe in God. So, their message to them is by no means a message of oppression but a message of liberation. The lyrics on „The Overcoming Years“ raise this issue again and again. And also the band's name is an explicit statement in this regard. Thus, all in all the sound and the message of this band form a coherent and inspiring overall picture.
So much for now. I have got to get out on the street: can feel my mohawk growing already.
BRING MIR DAS GEFÜHL ZURÜCK!
In den späten 80er- und frühen 90er-Jahren habe ich meist in meinem Kinderzimmer gehockt und mit Bauklötzen gespielt oder mit meiner Modell-Eisenbahn. Anstatt – wie ich es hätte tun sollen – meine Haare blau zu färben und laute Musik von wilden Bands zu hören. Doch Spätzündern wie mir kann nun geholfen werden. Denn die Band Unshackled aus El Paso, Texas, hat unlängst ihre CD „The Overcoming Years“ auf Thumper Punk veröffentlicht. Auf diesem Album spielen sie harten aber melodiösen Punkrock im Stil der späten 80er und garnieren ihren Sound mit einer Prise modernem Hardcore. Beim Hören dieser CD werde ich innerlich in die gute alte Zeit zurückversetzt, die man eine „goldene Ära“ nennen könnte, wäre ihr Glanz nicht eher ein ranzig-blechiger gewesen. Die Musik von Unshackled atmet noch das leicht anarchistische Flair der Generation Chaostage.
Doch anstatt mit Steinen werfen Unshackled in erster Linie mit klaren Lyrics um sich. Darin machen sie deutlich, dass ihre Einstellung – völlig punkmäßig – von starken Überzeugungen getragen ist. In deren Mittelpunkt steht der Aufruf zum Vertrauen: „Vertrau auf das Leben und vertrau auf Gott!“ schreien Unshackled ihrem Publikum entgegen. „Ihr müsst euch nicht tagtäglich mit dem Internet oder mit irgendwelchen Substanzen bedröhnen, sondern ihr könnt euer Leben in die Hand nehmen und etwas daraus machen.“
Dass diese Botschaft offensichtlich vom christlichen Glauben der Band geprägt ist, mag nach der Ansicht fundamentalistischer Anarchisten dem Punk-Geist der 80er/90er widersprechen. Doch Punk bedeutet, sich eine eigene Meinung zu bilden und zu ihr zu stehen. Und das haben Unshackled ganz klar getan. Sie haben sich Gedanken gemacht und sich daraufhin für den Glauben an Gott entschieden. Ihre Botschaft ist für sie daher mitnichten eine Botschaft der Unterdrückung sondern eine Botschaft der Befreiung. Die Lyrics auf „The Overcoming Years“ bringen das immer wieder zur Sprache. Und auch der Bandname ist diesbezüglich ja ein deutliches Statement. Unter dem Strich geben der Sound und die Themen dieser Band also ein stimmiges und inspirierendes Gesamtbild ab.
So viel für heute. Ich muss jetzt los auf die Straße: spüre schon meinen Iro wachsen.
