Hippie oder Punk?

War Jesus jetzt Hippie oder Punk? Vermutlich hatte er lange Haare und einen Bart. Nach der Darstellung des Johannesevangeliums hat er auch gerne von Frieden und Liebe erzählt. Das wirkt alles ziemlich hippie-mäßig. Deswegen bilden NOFX den Peace-and-Love-Jesus auch auf einer ihrer EPs ab und betiteln das Werk mit „Never Trust a Hippy“. Aber auf der anderen Seite warnt Jesus auch krass vor dem Mainstream. Was die meisten Leute gut und richtig finden, ist gerade deshalb vermutlich falsch. „Haltet euch fern von der Hauptstraße, auf der die Masse unterwegs ist,“ sagt Jesus zu seinen Freunden im Matthäusevangelium, „und entscheidet euch stattdessen lieber für den richtigen Weg, auch wenn er unbequem zu gehen ist.“ Eine eigene Meinung zu vertreten, zum eigenen Glauben zu stehen, findet Jesus dabei sogar wichtiger als irgendwelches Gefasel von Friede, Freude und Eierkuchen. Hier tritt er also richtig rebellisch auf, wie ein echter Punk.

Wahrscheinlich wird Jesus sich trotzdem nicht in die eine oder andere Cliquen-Schublade zwängen lassen. Das unterscheidet ihn von der Band The Rekoning. Diese kalifornischen Jungs sind nämlich sehr eindeutig punk, und zwar vom Feinsten. Der Titel ihres Albums „The Road Less Traveled“ (Strike First 2009) bezieht sich auf den Ausspruch Jesu über die Hauptstraße und den unbequemen Weg. Auch wenn sie schon seit mehr als einem Jahr auf dem Markt ist, muss ich auf diese Platte hier noch einmal hinweisen. Genauso rebellisch wie der Titel ist nämlich auch ihr Sound. Street-Punk mit rotzigen Melodien, der gelegentlich durch folkige Elemente aufgelockert wird. Wie die Kollegen von Flatfoot 56 haben auch The Rekoning eine Mandoline mit am Start. Bei aufgedrehtem Volume-Regler macht das einfach irregute Laune. Beinahe hätte ich gesagt „Heidenspaß“ - aber das wäre natürlich Quatsch, denn der Glaube an Gott ist der Band sehr wichtig. Viele ihrer Lyrics befassen sich mit dem Thema. Mit diesem Soundtrack im Ohr mache ich mich darum nun auch auf den Weg. Und zwar auf den steinigen.


HIPPY OR PUNK?

Was Jesus a Hippy or a Punk again? Supposably he wore long hair and a beard. According to the presentation in the gospel of John he also liked to talk about peace and love a lot. All of this appears to be quite hippy-like. That is why NOFX picture the Peace-and-Love-Jesus on one of their EPs and call the work „Never Trust a Hippy“. But on the other hand Jesus also warns starkly against the mainstream. What most people consider to be good and right might very well be wrong – especially because so many believe in it. „Keep yourselves away from the main road where the masses are traveling“, Jesus says to his friends in the gospel of Matthew, „and better choose the right way, even if it is uncomfortable to walk on.“ To hold an own oppinion and to stand up for one's faith is, Jesus thinks, even more important than some slipslop about peace, love and chocolate. Here, Jesus acts real rebelliously, like a true punk.

Probably Jesus still cannot be pigeonholed. So, here, he differs from the band The Rekoning. Cause these guys from California are punk very unambiguously. In fact they are punk at its finest. The title of their current album „The Road Less Traveled“ (Strike First 2009) refers to Jesus' dictum about the main road and the uncomfortable path. I have got to say a few words about this record here although it has hit the High Street more than one year ago already. The sound of the reord is just as rebellious as its title. Street punk with perky melodies that is occasionally mixed up by folk elements. Like the comrades from Flatfoot 56, The Rekoning, too, know how to play a mandolin. If you turn up your volume control this will just put you in a mind-blowingly good mood. Along the way faith in God matters a lot to the band. Many of their lyrics deal with this point. With this soundtrack on my ears I will hit the road now. To be more precise: the stony one.
